REMINDER ON HOMOSEXUALITY IN INDIA
For the ones who did not read the first post on the topic, here is a reminder about how gays are considered in modern India and how the society and the law is considering homosexuality.
Homosexuality is generally considered a taboo subject by both Indian civil society and the government. Public discussion of homosexuality in India has been inhibited by the fact that sexuality in any form is rarely discussed openly. In recent years, however, attitudes towards homosexuality have shifted slightly. In particular, there have been more depictions and discussions of homosexuality in the Indian news media and by Bollywood.
SECTION 377
On 2 July 2009, the Delhi High Court decriminalised homosexual intercourse between consenting adults, throughout India, where Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was adjudged to violate the fundamental right to life and liberty and the right to equality as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
GAY ART IN NEW DELHI
New Delhi:
A small band of artists is exploring taboos of alternative sexuality, erotic love and the body as a medium of extreme expression of anger, passion and protest on the visual canvas. They are keeping alive the ancient legacy of eroticism in the Indian artistic tradition.
“Sexuality has been a part of culture for hundreds of years in the temple sculptures of Khajuraho and in the visual portrayals of Krishna Leela,” Sushma K. Bahl, a senior art critic, historian and author, told reporters.
Bahl said, “During the Mughal period, the bold depiction of human body in Indian art was replaced by more subtle portrayals of women with the `zenana` culture”. In the Victorian era, eroticism was seen as a taboo in art, but it has revived after independence, the art historian said.
One of India`s leading photo-essayists, Sunil Gupta, showcased “Sun City”, a visual narrative about gay love across continents in the country for the first time last week.

Indian Police Close Down Gay Photography Exhibit In New Delhi
Though the Indian government has made it clear it has no intentions of recriminalizing homosexuality, LGBT issues are still contentious: An exhibition by gay photographer Sunil Gupta closed Saturday after police stormed the gallery and ordered it shuttered.
Sponsored by Alliance Française as part of the current Francophone Festival, “Sun City & Other Stories” opened Friday and was still in previews at New Delhi’s Galerie Romain Rolland when an attendee notified the police that it contained obscene images. Reports the Hindustani Times:
When we contacted the Tughlaq Road police station, an official said, “A man named Hargobind Arora called up that the show has adult and nude photos on display. That’s when we sent a squad.”
Gupta is being diplomatic about the whole thing, telling the Times, “I’m not in a position to say anything. Calling off the exhibition was Alliance Française’s decision.”
