AMERICAN COWBOYS COULD BE GAY
In the first part of this post (click here to see Gay Cowboys: Hot Men in the Wild West -Part 1-), we have underlined the important role of the movie ‘Brokeback Mountain’ in the recognition that the iconic American cowboy has also a gay side as it exists in the rest of the American society
MIKE, A GAY RANCHER IN REAL LIFE
In an interview Mike Hartman from Estacada (Oregon) , a 47 year old gay rancher, sated that for him the movie certainly woke up things and brought to mind incidents of his life which really rang true. He said” Some of the scenes were such an accurate depiction of the fear and longing that you go through it was eerie’. Mike competed in rodeos circuits when he was in his twenties ( in the 80′s), he remind that they were about fourteen gays guys competing, and when they ‘d to see each other it was very similar to the movie and it was very hard. They were very careful all the time and living with a huge fear to be discovered, as they were worried to be disowned, or bashed, or that they even maybe killed.
THE MOVIE UNVEILS THE REALITY
Hartman saw the film with his partner and admits that he saw clearly in Ennis character (Heath Ledger in the film), the character of his friend: a big, strong, honest and hard working man. This guy was raised in a homophobic society, and they fell in love and lived together fro a long time. And the day after they saw the film it was a kind of mess between them, and his partner had to face the same issues that he was not ready to deal with like Ennis has to deal with in the movie.
NO MORE SHAME
Now both are out and unashamed of their sexuality. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is for them an important step to put forth an image of cowboys gay characters as it was never been mentioned in the media before, that of the rugged everyman who just happens to be gay.
